Eradicating stigma associated with mental health issues is my passion and is incredibly important for schools to address. "The consequences of failing to address adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults." ~World Health Organization. https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/adolescent-mental-health)
Kids who fear being stigmatized may not reach out for help, which can end in tragedy. I served five years as a volunteer facilitator for NAMI Butte County's Family to Family class, a 12 week long free educational program offered to family members of persons living with mental health issues. When possible, I incorporated mental health data and resources into classroom lessons to educate students because it is only through education that we will stop stigma so people will seek help without fear. NAMI is a great resource, and I think there is an opportunity to collaborate with our schools, educating staff, students and families to help all students reach their potential.
